I started the SFACC 300k at 2.00 am with no sleep. That was my first mistake. I took plenty of salt and other minerals early on but no salt later. Had a great ride with friend Trevor through the night, watched the full moon glow over the channel and saw the sunrise over the River Rother. The day become very hot, which again didn’t help and at about 3.00pm, ironically when England kicked off against their disastrous World Cup game against the Germans, I started to feel sick. For the next two hours I struggled on to Dungeness with good old Trevor staying with me.  At the cafe check point I became very dizzy and my legs buckled under me. I knew that was it. Trevor’s son Ed came and collected me and drove me back to Bethersden where feeling better I managed to drive home.

Still it was my first night ride and longest continuous ride ever at 150 miles.

I will return!
