Once again all records have been broken, that’s 1 in 50 people in the UK now have the Covid virus. Desperation now as all hopes hang on the lockdown and vaccinations. There have been 1.3 million vaccinations but that is over nearly a month. However, more hubs are opening up now the Oxford vaccine is being rolled out.

Mum has now gone 15 days since her positive Covid test. Whilst she isn’t showing any real signs of Covid, she is clearly not coping well. She is eating very little and according to staff she is hiding her food under the bed and also throwing it out of the window like she used to at the flat. Although technically she comes out of isolation soon, she will not be allowed out of her room till the outbreak has completely cleared from the home and that is likely to be some considerable time. I am not permitted to know how many residents and staff have the virus but it is significant. At the moment all staff entering Mum’s room have to be in the high level of PPE, it is called barrier nursing. However, once Mum is not isolating, the staff will revert to face mask, gloves and apron when entering the room. That might make it slightly easier for mum to cope, it must be awful seeing everyone who comes in looking like a spaceman!

I asked if I could FaceTime with Mum today but the message came back that Mum didn’t feel up to it and is staying in bed all day. I have made an appointment for 09.30 on Thursday when Amanda the activities lady will contact me and if Mum is feeling better we can see each other online.

I like to write as I feel in my blogs and today I really do feel that Mum is moving towards the end. She knows she is going to be kept in her room for sometime and now she cannot mix with other residents she hasn’t got the quality of life she has enjoyed even recently. Refusing food and drink is not a good sign, there is only so much that a 95 yr old body can take. Having said that, she bounced back from a fall and hip replacement and she is a real tough lady. She appears to have fought off serious Covid symptoms so she is just as likely to prove me wrong. Let’s hope so.
