In 2011 I was proud to represent my country in a World Championship. In 2012 I was even more proud to carry the Olympic Torch. So nobody could accuse me of being anti- British. Things have now changed since the vote took us out of the EU. Some people are anti- Europeans for no reason other than what they read in the gutter press. Now we have a world pandemic and and I am afraid that people I am close to are treating the law with utter contempt and seem to have no concept of the seriousness of the current situation. I have lost two of my school friends to Covid, and also a past work colleague. Our close friend MaryL has Covid, but hopefully she will get through it OK. We are in Tier 4 the highest level and we must not have more than one household in a home at any one time.
Sue and I had a cycle ride today and I had a run. I was amazed to see groups of people entering houses who were clearly not all from that household. I know a single person can be in a bubble with their family and that is permitted, but I am sure the ones I have seen are not. In our road there is a young man with a family who has the virus and some doors down people were joining others in a household where I know for a fact they are not in a bubble. The news tells us today that the variant virus has now entered Switzerland, by two British skiers. Why are people going on holiday? We have not been abroad now since September 2019. It’s a small price to pay to help reduce the risk of spread. Why have some chosen to ignore the law just so they can see their grandparents. We would have loved to have shared Xmas with our grandchildren but we and their parents decided quite rightly, that we shouldn’t. It’s not that it was just about breaking the law, it was more that it is one of highest risks to meet indoors. It grieves me that some people can be so selfish and uncaring about spreading the virus.
In fairness, I am sure that the majority are like us and have been law abiding and sensible. Sue and I like many others, had a lovely day together for Xmas and Boxing Day. Ok charades and cracker jokes aren’t quite as exciting when the kids aren’t here, but tonight our three families got together on zoom and had some fun with a quiz night. We enjoyed it and I was proud that both our sons and their wives decided to not risk joining us this year. Sorry dear Blog for this rant today on Boxing Day, goodwill to all men and all that, but these are difficult and dangerous times and we all need to work together, not just some of us.
