50 years ago today a fire engine crashed on its way to an incident. Roger our close friend, lost a leg and had severe burns. He survived and after extensive time in hospital he married Mary and they had a child, Andrew. Along with Roger and Mary, Sue and I bought the villa in Spain in 2000 but sadly Roger died in 2006 after an accident. Our best man and probably my closest friend at the time, Malcolm, was badly burned in the fire engine crash and died 4 days later of his burns.

Today a small memorial service was held at the fire station. Both Stephanie, Malcolm’s widow and Mary both agreed to attend. I collected Steph and Andrew came with Mary. Whilst the service went well it was a shame that the vicar had been given some text to read which described the horror of what happened, in graphic detail. Very upsetting particularly for Steph and Mary. Steph came back to our house and Sue and I had a nice chat about our families etc. On top of all this we had the news that another of my friends I worked with, Trevor, died yesterday. He and Malcolm were great friends all those years ago. Trevor was a great character and will be greatly missed.

Today was also significant as most schools opened up after a six month break because of the virus. Somewhat of a gamble by the government, there are rules and all sorts of precautions in place but nobody still knows the significance of spread when groups of youngsters get together. Time, will no doubt tell.

My swelling in the mouth is still reducing, I just hope that the dissolvable stitches hurry up and dissolve, they are most irritating!
