The Country stood still today. A sunny but very cold day. We stayed at home but spent a lot of time with the Grandkids on FaceTime and Zoom. It was lovely to see them but not the same as having them with us. I know of more people today who ignored the law and had Xmas lunch with their separate household families. I know I was annoyed yesterday and I still feel the same today. Reported deaths in England alone is now over 70.000. The new variant of the virus is spreading much faster than previous variants or indeed the coronavirus itself. Suggestion in the news today that not only will most of, if not all, of the country go into Tier 4 after Xmas. Scientists are also suggesting that schools do not re-open. Sue and I can live with the restrictions it’s only a pity some others can’t!

Some 700 hauliers have been cleared to return to France after negative testing. 5,000 still waiting at Manston, on the M20 and surrounding roads. Military helping with tests and many volunteers taking food and drink to the stranded drivers who spent their Xmas today in their lorry cabs. Although there is some movement it will be a long time before many are home.

We have been lucky being at home. Sue made a brilliant Xmas lunch with a massive turkey and loads of veggies. Despite having second helpings it will keep us going for ages. Turkey sandwiches and coffee with a wee drop of brandy for our bike ride tomorrow if it stays fine. Sue was thrilled with her surprise rear view mirror for her bike. I tried to fit it this evening but it doesn’t fit, so that will be going back to the shop.

After a late lunch followed by charades and jokes from the crackers we collapsed in a heap and watched The Italian Job. A great film which we saw at the cinema just a few months before we were married in 1969. To see so many vintage minis and E Type Jags smashed up just for a film it made me cringe! Still it was fun.

Only a small care report for Mum today, she seems Ok but refused a wash as she was’t feeling too good. That could just be one of her regular dizzy spells. I just hope it’s not something worse. I will check in the morning.
